Morocco Using Capacities of Maktab Schools for Teaching Quran

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Morocco’s Awqaf and Islamic affairs minister said his ministry is developing the use of old Quran schools, known as Maktabs, for teaching the Holy Quran to school students.

Ahmed Toufiq said the number of Maktabs being used under the supervision of the ministry for Quran teaching to school students has risen from 114 to 293.

He added that more than 36,000 students are learning the Quran in these schools while the number was 7,600 in 2007.

The budget allocated to running and maintaining these schools has also increased fro, 3 million Moroccan dirhams in 2004 to 324 million dirhams in 2022, the Awqaf minister noted.

Toufiq said the ministry has also allotted funds for equipping the old schools with new educational equipment.

These efforts show the importance attached to memorizing the Holy Quran in Morocco, the official stated.

He went on to say that the Awqaf ministry is determined to maintain and improve the quality of Quranic education in the country.

Morocco is a North African Arab country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Islam is the predominant religion in Morocco, with some 99 percent of the population adhering to it.
